New to growing mushrooms?
There are A LOT of edible mushrooms you can grow at home, but it really depends on where you’d like to grow them! For the beginner, we recommend oyster mushrooms (indoor and outdoor), Wine Cap (outdoor beds) and shiitake (indoor bags or outdoor logs). All are reliable producers, and will increase the likelihood of a successful first attempt!
Mushrooms grow on grains when the mycelium is establishing itself, and these grains are transferred to a fruiting substrate in order to get mushrooms and multiple harvests. Different mushrooms grow on different fruiting substrates, but they are all able to grow on the same grain. Please see our Mushroom Substrate Compatibility Guide for a better understanding of what your specific species will grow on -> click here.
Mushrooms can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 10 months to grow from a liquid culture all the way to the first harvest. The timeline varies depending on the type of mushroom, the style of growing, and the environment you grow them in. Oyster mushrooms are the fastest mushroom to grow – with harvests in 4-5 weeks using Myterra Labs Gourmet Mushroom Kit.
Each mushroom will have a different set of environmental conditions that they prefer to grow in. Generally, most mushrooms prefer a humid environment and indirect sunlight or shade. Optimal environmental conditions are specified with each liquid culture.
Substrate is the material needed to grow mushroom mycelia and acts as a souce of nutrition, energy, structural support and water necessary for the mycelia to produce fruits/mushrooms. Mushrooms needing substrate to grow can be compared to plants needing soil to grow. Please ensure that you are using the correct type of substrate for the species of mushroom that you want to grow.
Using sterilized substrates is crucial for growing mushrooms because it eliminates competing organisms and contaminants, providing a clean environment for the mushrooms to thrive. This ensures healthier and more successful mushroom cultivation, minimizing the risk of contamination and maximizing yields.
